Anton Mayr

Anton Mayr (born February 6, 1922 in Dürrnhaar ; † April 12, 2014 in Starnberg ) was a German veterinarian and university professor.

life and work

Mayr studied veterinary medicine in Munich. During his studies in 1947 he became a member of the Munich fraternity Alemannia . It was established in 1951 with a thesis on tuberculosis germs can doctorate . He then worked at the Bavarian State Vaccination Institute in Munich, where he mainly dealt with smallpox viruses . In 1955 he completed his habilitation in microbiology and worked from 1955 to 1963 at the Federal Research Center for Virus Diseases . In 1963 Mayr was appointed to the chair for microbiology and animal disease studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Scientifically, Mayr worked primarily in the field of immunity processes in infectious diseases and live vaccines . The MVA virus (Modified Vaccinia Ankara Virus) developed by him created the basis for safe smallpox vaccines .

Mayr wrote several specialist books. The textbook Microbiology and General Epidemiology , founded by Michael Rolle in 1949, was published by Mayr together with Rolle from the third edition. The "Rolle / Mayr" is considered the German-language standard work on veterinary microbiology. The ninth edition of the textbook was published in 2011.

Honors

In 1964 Mayr was appointed to the New York Academy of Sciences and in 1970 to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . He was honorary chairman of the German Veterinary Society . He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover , the University of Zurich and the Agricultural Faculty Weihenstephan . He also received the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class .

In 2015, the German Veterinary Medicine Society renamed its young talent award to the Anton Mayr Prize . On January 14, 2016, an Anton Mayr Symposium was held as part of the 8th Leipzig Veterinary Congress .
