German Veterinary Society
The German Veterinary Medical Society e. V. ( DVG ) is a scientific society of veterinary medicine in Germany and was founded in 1951. It has around 5,000 veterinarians .
history
In 1949 the two professors Herbert Haupt and Elmar Roots from Giessen wrote a call for the establishment of a scientific veterinary association in the German Veterinary Weekly . In 1951 the Scientific Association of German Veterinarians was founded on the Veterinary Faculty Day . Founding members were Professors Walther Baier , Ewald Berge , Paul Cohrs , Otto Dehner , Paul Henkels , Martin Lerche , Wilhelm Nusshag and Melchior Westhues . a year later the association was renamed the German Veterinary Society . In 1955 it was entered in the register of associations.
tasks
Promotion of science, research and teaching
The tasks of the DVG are the promotion of science, research and teaching as well as the promotion of young talent. The association organizes advanced training events in all areas of the veterinary profession and provides a platform for science through congresses. It also offers advice to the public, the media and politics.
Foundations and Awards
The DVG awards grants and prizes to young scientists . The funds come from the association's own "DVG Foundation for the Promotion of Young Scientists" and from four other foundations that the DVG manages in trust (Annelise and Curt Höhner Foundation, Ursula and Heinz-Georg Klös Foundation, Karl-Fritzsche -Foundation, endowment). In addition, the DVG awards the Martin Lerche Research Prize and the Anton Mayr Prize to promote young scientists.
Disinfectant lists
The association publishes disinfectant lists for the food sector as well as for animal husbandry. Disinfection products included in these lists have been assessed, tested and found to be effective in accordance with the DVG test guidelines.
The blue dog
The Blue Dog is a transnational project with the aim of preventing bite injuries in children between the ages of three and six. In Germany the project is supervised by the DVG.
structure
The German Veterinary Society is a registered association based in Giessen . Veterinarians can become members as well as scientists who are not veterinarians, if two board members are advised. Membership is voluntary.

Specialist groups
The association is divided into 36 specialist groups for all areas of veterinary medicine, which are grouped into six working areas. There are also six working groups / committees that deal with specific topics. Scientific knowledge and practice-related developments are exchanged in the specialist groups and working groups and made available to veterinarians, scientists and other interested parties in conferences and congresses.
Each member is also entitled to vote in up to two specialist groups. You can choose to belong to the specialist groups yourself.
Section meeting
The specialist group assembly consists of the members of the specialist group and elects the specialist group leader.
The department heads of a work area elect the head of the work area from among their number, who is also a member of the board and represents the respective work area there.
Assembly of delegates
In the assembly of delegates, the specialist group leaders represent their respective specialist groups. Members of the association are entitled to take part in the assembly of delegates, but have no voting rights.
Board
The board consists of the chairman and his deputy (also treasurer) as well as the heads of the work areas. The chairman of the society is Uwe Truyen from the University of Leipzig .

DVG Service GmbH
To offer and carry out training courses and congresses and to publish publications such as In 2001, the DVG founded DVG Service GmbH to be able to publish conference proceedings in its own publishing house . It is an institution of the association and takes over its economic activities.
