Karl Fritzsche (veterinarian)

Karl Fritzsche (born December 20, 1906 in Ottendorf near Sebnitz , † November 20, 2000 ) was a German veterinarian . He is considered the nestor of poultry medicine in Germany.

Life

The son of the Böhlen headmaster Oskar Fritzsche attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig from 1916 , which he left in 1926 with the school leaving certificate. He then studied veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1930 under Karl Nieberle .

His professional career initially took him to Breslau , where he worked at the Animal Health Office under Martin Lerche , from whom he received his scientific training. He researched and published on Marek's poultry disease and made a name for himself by setting up a poultry health service.

In 1940 he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig with a thesis on poultry paralyzes. After doing military service in a veterinary examination unit, he was commissioned in 1946 to set up the State Veterinary Investigation Office for Rhineland-Palatinate in Koblenz , which he headed as director until he retired in 1971.

From 1953 he taught poultry diseases at the University of Giessen . In addition, over 250 scientific papers on various topics of veterinary medicine were produced. He was also the co-editor of a textbook on poultry diseases, which became a standard work in veterinary medicine.

As head of the microbiology department of the German Veterinary Medical Society for many years , he was made an honorary member.

In 1971 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover

In 1993 he donated the Karl Fritzsche Prize of the Veterinary Medical Society, which is to be awarded to young veterinary scientists who successfully research infectious diseases in poultry.
