Walther Baier

Walther Baier (according to Walter Baier's birth certificate, born June 22, 1903 in Neustadt an der Haardt , Palatinate; † March 4, 2003 in Marquartstein , Upper Bavaria ) was a German veterinarian, veterinary gynecologist and clinician.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Augsburg, Baier studied veterinary medicine at the veterinary faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU), received his license to practice medicine , worked as an assistant at the Institute for Animal Anatomy (still in Munich) and received his doctorate in 1927. med. vet. He then moved to the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover (TiHo), where he completed his habilitation in the subject of anatomy in 1931, was now senior assistant and prosector at the anatomical institute and, at the age of 28, was a private lecturer in veterinary anatomy.

In 1933, Baier was dismissed from university for political reasons. He moved to Bad Hersfeld (Hessen), later to Marktheidenfeld (Lower Franconia) and practiced as a veterinarian. One focus of his work was the fight against sterility in cattle and horses. He also qualified as a specialist veterinarian for surgery. During World War II he was a military district surgeon and veterinary officer in the horse hospital in Nuremberg .

In 1948, Baier was appointed full professor of anatomy, histology and embryology as well as acting as director of the gynecological and outpatient veterinary clinic at LMU Munich. Baier was a founding member of the German Veterinary Medical Society in 1951 . After a reorganization of the specialist areas, he became professor of physiology and pathology of reproduction, in particular gynecology and obstetrics, in 1952, and retained the management of the specialist clinic. In 1972 he took his well-deserved retirement, died in 2003 as Nestor of the Munich veterinary faculty at the age of almost 100 and was buried in the St. Remigius cemetery in Schleching (Upper Bavaria).
