Colonel de Basil

Colonel de Basil (born September 16, 1888 according to the passport in Kaunas , but more likely in Baku ; † July 27, 1951 in Paris , maiden name Wassili Grigorjewitsch Woskressensky / Russian Василий Григорьевич Воскресенский ) was a Russian-English ballet manager.

Life

As a colonel in the Kuban Cossack army , he fought in the First World War from 1917 to 1918. In 1919 he emigrated to Paris and in 1925 became assistant to Prince Alexis Tsereteli, who organized Russian opera seasons in Paris and London. In 1932, Basil founded Les Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo together with René Blum . In 1933 Basil became general director, Blum artistic director. The troupe based in Monte Carlo already appeared as Ballets Russes du Col. W. de Basil in 1934 , while Blum was still named as artistic director.

From 1934 the company danced mainly in London and the USA. In April 1935, Blum and Basil agreed to go their own way, for which the colonel paid a severance payment of 250,000 francs. In April 1936, Blum then founded his own Ballet de Monte Carlo . After several renaming, Basil's troupe became the original Ballet Russe in October 1939 .
