The Colored Soldiers Monument on the Green Hill Cemetery in Frankfort , Kentucky at the junction of US Highway 60 and US Highway 127 is the only war memorial of the African American in Kentucky, the members of United States Colored Troops is dedicated to the American Civil War took part and only one out of four in the United States at all. It is the only other monument erected by the Grand Army of the Republic in Kentucky besides the GAR Monument in Covington .

history

The state of Kentucky did not allow any recruiting of blacks until March 1, 1864, by law . A total of 23,703 African Americans from Kentucky were admitted to 23 regiments of the Union Army , around a third of all soldiers from Kentucky who fought on the Union side against the Confederate States Army . The registered black soldiers immediately received all civil rights . Although these soldiers were mostly assigned to barracks services, they also had contact with the enemy, mostly in Tennessee and North Carolina . After the war she was sent to Texas to France to discourage, Mexico to conquer. Only the state of Louisiana raised more African American soldiers than Kentucky.

The monument was built from limestone in 1924 . The base is made of poured concrete . The inscriptions around the column name the 142 African-American soldiers from Central Kentucky. All that is known about the construction costs is that they were several hundred dollars . The memorial was dedicated on July 4, 1924.

On July 17, 1997, the Colored Soldiers Monument in Frankfort was added to the National Register of Historic Places along with 60 other Kentucky monuments . The Confederate Monument in Frankfort is the only other one in Frankfort; it is in Frankfort Cemetery , a mile to the west.
