Colura is the botanical name for a genus of the Jungermanniopsida , it wasfirst describedby Dumortier in 1835 .

description

The plants are only a few millimeters in size and all live as epiphytes or epiphylls . The leaves, which are only 1 mm in size, form small water sacs that are closed with a kind of flap and serve in Colura zoophaga - as has been suspected for almost a hundred years but could not be proven until 2000 - as catching devices for ciliates and similar unicellular organisms, which after only a short life span in them Traps die and partly diffuse directly into the moss tissue, where they are partly broken down by bacteria.

The species of the genus colonize almost all tropical regions, except for Colura calyptrifolia , which can be found from the tropics to Scotland. No species can be found in the German-speaking area.
