The Jungermanniopsida are a class of liverworts . The Jungermanniopsida are divided into four subclasses, those of the Jungermanniidae contain leafy representatives (folios), those of the other subclasses have a simple thallus . The class is extremely extensive with over 4500 species.

features

The Jungermanniales are divided into stems and leaflets . The leaflets without a midrib originally sit in three rows laterally. In some species, the third row at the bottom is omitted. In contrast, the types of butcheriales are “thallos” built. Their thallus is more simply built than that of the Marchantiopsida . It has neither air chambers nor respiratory pores and is only a few cell layers thick. A central stripe is usually thicker than the edge, and in some species, such as the genus Metzgeria, there is a sharply delineated central rib. In some species the thallus is lobed at the edge, which then gives the impression of two rows of leaflets. The thallus is formed from two-edged apex cells, the leafy forms from three-edged apex cells.

In almost all tissues of the Jungermanniopsida there are oil bodies made of terpenes , which give them a typical scent.

The gametangia stand individually and are not grouped together in gametangia stands.

The sporophyte consists of a spore capsule that is lifted up by a long stalk ( seta ). The spore capsule opens lengthways in 4 flaps.

Names

The eponymous genus, Jungermannia , was named by Carl von Linné after Ludwig Jungermann (1572–1653). Due to the different spellings of Jungerman's names, with one or two n, the spelling Jungermania was also used by some systematics . However, the spelling Linnaeus is decisive.

Systematics

The Jungermanniopsida are subdivided as follows. Taxa are fully listed down to the family level, genera and species are only examples:
