The Metzgeriaceae are the only family in the order of the Metzgeriales , a group of mosses with a simply built thallus that includes around 100 species in four genera.

The Metzgeriaceae are distributed worldwide, but have their main distribution in the tropics and subtropics.

features

The thalli are linear and have a distinct midrib and single-layered thallus wings. A central strand is missing. Unicellular hairs are often found on the edge of the thallus. Oil bodies are missing or only small. The gametangia are formed on short, special branches. The kalyptra is elongated, fleshy, and hairy. A pseudoperianth is missing. The seta is short. The sporangium is round to oval. It opens with four slots.

Systematics

Its name goes back to the engraver Johann Baptist Metzger from Staufen im Breisgau , after whom the genus Metzgeria is named. The family comprises five genera, all of which, with the exception of Metzgeria, are very poor in species:

distribution

The species of the order are distributed worldwide from the polar regions to the tropics. However, they reach their greatest diversity in the subtropics and tropics .
