Metzgeria is a genus of thallose, i.e. leafless liverworts . The genus is named after the engraver Johann Baptist Metzger from Staufen im Breisgau .
features
The thalli of the mosses of this family are, apart from the always present midrib, only one cell layer thick. They are linear in shape and branch out in a forked manner. The thalli are often hairy or ciliate, at least at the edges and under the midrib.
On the midrib, short, curved side branches form on the underside of the thalli, on which the spherical antheridia and archegonia stand. The capsules are embedded in a hairy kalyptra emerging from the archegonium .
However, many species also reproduce vegetatively through shoots on the edge of the thallus, especially in the front parts.

The genus includes around 100 species.
The main distribution area of the genus is in the tropics of the southern hemisphere. Only the following species occur in Europe:
- Broad Igelhaubenmoos ( Metzgeria conjugata ), a common and conspicuous species of the mountains and low mountain ranges.
- Metzgeria fruticulosa
- Common hedgehog hood moss ( Metzgeria furcata )
- Metzgeria leptoneura (in Europe only on the British Isles, Ireland and the Faroe Islands)
- Metzgeria simplex (is also incorporated into Metzgeria conjugata )
- Metzgeria temperata
