The broad Igelhaubenmoos ( Metzgeria conjugata ) is a liverwort species from the Metzgeriaceae family .
Identifying features
The moss forms lying, often extensive and dense coatings. The linear, about 1 to 1.5 mm wide and up to 2.5 cm long, green thalli have clearly recurved edges, a central rib and are forked. The thallus wings on both sides of the rib consist of only one layer of cells, the rib is multi-layered. The underside of the ribs and the edges of the thallus are covered with numerous hairs. The middle thallus cells have a size of about 40 to 65 µm. The monoecious liverwort does not breed and only rarely develops sporophytes .
Location requirements
Metzgeria conjugata grows in mostly shady, moist to wet, also trickled locations in forests, especially on rocks or stones, furthermore on earth and on the base of trees. Compared to the other native species of the genus Metzgeria , it is significantly more competitive.
distribution
Metzgeria conjugata is widespread in Europe, especially in the western and central parts. In Central Europe, the main areas of distribution are in the low mountain ranges and the Alps, where it penetrates into the high-montane level. There are other occurrences in Asia, South Africa, America, New Zealand.
