Odontoschisma denudatum is a liverwort species from the Cephaloziaceae family and belongs to the group of leafed liverworts. German-language names are Entblößtes Schlitzkelch-Lebermoos or Nacktes Schlitzkelchmoos .

features

Odontoschisma denudatum forms yellow-green to brown, loose to dense lawns. The prostrate, sparsely branched plants are up to 2 centimeters long. At the ends they are directed upwards and often elongated like flagella, with whitish clusters of brood bodies at the tip. The obliquely positioned, undershot flank leaves are up to 0.75 millimeters long, rounded, egg-shaped and indistinctly lined. Lower leaves are usually only clearly developed at the shoot tips. They are up to 0.35 millimeters long, two-pointed or undivided.

Lamina cells are about 23 × 30 µm in size in the middle of the leaf and have very distinct nodular to square corner thickenings. There are 3 to 5 large oil bodies per cell.

The species is diocesan . Bracts are 2- to 3-lobed. The perianth is elongated egg-shaped and deeply longitudinally folds above, with a notched to dentate mouth. Spores are 8 to 10 µm in size. The moss rarely fruit. Spore ripening time is in spring.

Location claims and distribution

Odontoschisma denudatum grows in forests and moors in shady, moist to wet, nutrient-poor locations and colonizes rotten wood, peat soils, raw humus and occasionally sandstone. Companion mosses are mainly Tetraphis pellucida , Dicranodontium denudatum , Lepidozia reptans and Blepharostoma trichophyllum .

The general distribution is sub-oceanic. In Central Europe it is particularly widespread in montane locations, but rarely on the plains. It is also found in Western and Northern Europe, parts of Asia, and North and Central America.
