Blepharostoma trichophyllum is a liverwort species from the Blepharostomataceae family . It is the only species in its family represented in Europe and belongs to the group of the leafy liverworts. German-language names are common eyelash moss or hair leaf liver moss .

features

Blepharostoma trichophyllum grows in dense, yellow-green lawns or occasionally between other mosses. The plants are very delicate, their creeping to ascending stems are irregularly branched, only 0.5 centimeters wide and up to 1.5 centimeters long. The transverse flank leaves are divided into four bristle-shaped, single-row leaf lobes down to the base. The cells of the leaf lobes are rectangular and contain 4 to 8 oil bodies. Lower leaves are present, they are similar to the flank leaves and have 2 to 4 leaf lobes.

The type of moss is usually monocial , occasionally dioecious . Sporogons are formed more often. Perianthia sit at the end of the trunk, are pear-shaped to cylindrical, bluntly triangular at the top and have a ciliate mouth. Spore capsules are egg-shaped, the 10 to 12 µm large spores are punctured and rough. Spherical, single-celled brood bodies are rarely formed at the ends of the leaf bristles .

Location requirements

Blepharostoma trichophyllum grows in forests on lime-free, humid, shady locations. Here it settles particularly on rotten wood, also in the trunk area of living trees and on silicate rock, more rarely on earth. It never grows in swamps.

Typical accompanying mosses are Lepidozia reptans , Tetraphis pellucida , Nowellia curvifolia and Tritomaria exsecta .

distribution

In Europe, the species is particularly widespread in the northern and central parts, but less so in the southern parts. It occurs from the plains to the subalpine level, it is less common in the lowlands.

Occurrences outside of Europe are found in Asia, North, Central and Northwestern South America, in tropical Africa, on the Canary Islands and Hawaii.
