The Broad Kahl fruit Moss ( Porella platyphylla , Syn. : Madotheca plytyphylla ) is a type of moss from the Department of liverworts (Marchantiophyta).
The scientific generic name Porella is the diminutive of the Greek porus = pore. The name was used by Johann Jacob Dillen in 1748 . However, the scientifically valid description was first made by Carl von Linné in 1762 .
description
The very strong moss has more or less regularly one or two pinnate, dull dark green twigs that are about three to five centimeters by two to three centimeters in size. The branches become two millimeters wide. The side leaves consist of a broad, oval upper lobe and small, elliptical, pointed, slightly arched lower lobes. The sub-leaves are tongue-shaped and smooth.
The reproduction takes place mainly through brood leaves and breaking off parts. Perianthia are rare.
Distribution and location
This species is common throughout the temperate Holarctic . It also thrives in fairly dry, but shady locations on bark, rock and layered walls, especially in limestone areas and on lava rock next to Porella baueri , with which it can possibly be confused.
