CommSy is free social software to support collaborative working methods. In its original purpose, it was developed as a teaching and learning platform for students and teachers. The further development enabled a general applicability in cooperative work and information areas. The software, designed as a portal, works server-based and database-supported. Within educational environments, it usually provides course-related communal or project work areas via the Internet . CommSy is a word creation from the English community system "community system".

Emergence

CommSy was created in 1999 at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hamburg as part of an extra-curricular working group and has been continuously developed on an open source basis under the GNU General Public License since then . The components of the system are freely available to those interested. The project was examined in research and diploma theses for clarity, usability and intuitive learnability.

Functionality

The system was designed for cooperative working environments such as those found in educational institutions, associations, companies and also in larger privately organized environments. It dispenses with strongly hierarchical user structures. CommSy is most frequently used as a communication and organization platform with a shared media library in a closed group of users. However, the latter is not absolutely necessary. In addition to the particular user-friendliness, CommSy can be flexibly configured in terms of the intended use.

  • Project rooms or common rooms can be created for a closed or open user group.
  • Participants / people can virtually depict and introduce themselves.
  • Digital materials of all kinds can be made available within a room by and for participants. These can be described in many ways and appropriately tagged. Researchability is accordingly possible.
  • The communication between the participants is supported by threaded discussions in a comfortable editor (forum function).
  • Dates / news are highlighted on a start page until a user has taken note of them or the deadline has expired.
  • Participants can form working groups or sub-groups and create their own material area.
  • There is a participant-related email interface.
  • Within a closed group of users there is only a flat hierarchy (moderator / user).
  • Participants can protect their materials and contributions.
  • The user interface can be configured in a variety of ways by moderators and users alike.
  • The program interfaces are heavily parameterized.
  • CommSy is easy and intuitive for users to learn, but still offers a high level of functionality.
  • Chat function ET chat to support cooperative working methods

distribution
