ConHex is an abstract and strategic board game for two people by Michail Antonow . The game was first published by 3-Hirn-Verlag in 2005 and implemented in 2006 with a wooden playing field and wooden balls by Gerhards Spiel und Design , and in 2011 it was published with colored game pieces by nestorgames. In 2007 the game was nominated for the best 2-player strategy game at the International Gamers Award .

Theme and equipment

The game is a 2-person game in which the players try to connect two opposite sides with their marker stones on a game board. They play on a square playing field, which consists of irregular hexagons and rectangles and have to get majorities of fields with their playing pieces or balls in order to be able to place a marker. The game material consists of the game board with 41 fields and 69 nodes as well as 26 pieces and 26 marker tiles in two colors. The equipment of the version by Gerhards Spiel und Design consists of a solid wooden playing field and marker plates made of smoked oak and maple as well as playing balls, which are made of wood or stone ( howlite and Brescia jasper ) depending on the design .

Style of play

At the start of the game, the game is placed between the two players. The players each receive the game pieces or balls and the marker tiles of their color.

Starting with a starting player, the two players take turns moving. The starting player places a piece on any node and in order to compensate for the advantage of the starting player, the next player can decide whether to leave the position to the starting player or to take over the node himself ( swap option or cake rule). Then the players alternately place a piece each on any node, whereby the pieces are scored for all adjacent fields.

As soon as a player has filled half of the nodes of a corner field (2 of 3) or a central field (3 of 6) or the majority of an edge square (2 of 3) or the central field (3 of 5) with his pieces, he places place one of his marker stones on this space.

With the help of the marker tiles, the players try to connect two opposite sides of the playing field before the opponent succeeds. The game ends when a player succeeds, who wins the game.

Development and reception

The game ConHex was developed by Michail Antonow and appeared in 2005 for the international game days in Essen by the German small publisher 3-Hirn-Verlag. In 2006 the wood manufacturer Gerhards Spiel und Design published a wooden version of the game with wooden balls.

In 2007 the game was nominated for the International Gamers Award as the best 2-player strategy game, but could not prevail against Mr. Jack . In 2011 it appeared as a new edition with colored game pieces at nestorgames. An online playable version of the game has been on the yucata.de platform since 2006.
