Russell George

Russell George (* 1932 in Pitcairn (Pennsylvania) ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also violin ).

Russell George came from a musical family and received violin lessons from an early age. He first played country music and won some competitions with his cousins. After his engagement as a contract soldier in the Navy, where he played trumpet and guitar in the band, he first worked in Jacksonville (Florida) and then worked for television. Then he moved to New York. From 1960 he played in the jazz bands of Kai Winding , Marian McPartland and Tony Mottola (with whom the first recordings were made in 1962), Joe Newman , Pee Wee Russell , Roger Kellaway , Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Bill Watrous . In 1967 he performed with Woody Herman and His Orchestra at the Monterey Jazz Festival . In the following years he played a. a. with JJ Johnson , Dave Frishberg , Stanley Turrentine , Gary McFarland , Urbie Green , O'Donel Levy, and Derek Smith ; he was also a member of the backing bands of vocalists such as Barbara Carroll , Peter Dean , Joyce Breach , Ed Reed and Terry Blaine . In the 2000s he still played with Bobby Gordon ( Joe Marsala: Lower Register , 2007, with Randy Reinhart , Keith Ingham , James Chirillo , Vince Giordano ) and in a trio with Joh Hart / Ray Parker ( Swingin 'Never Hurt Nobody ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 45 recording sessions between 1962 and 2012. As a studio musician , he also worked with Judy Collins , Frank Sinatra , Barry Manilow and Paul Simon .
