The cone-head mosses ( Conocephalum ) are a small genus of liverworts . This genus is the only one in its Conocephalaceae family .
Surname
The name Conocephalum comes from the Greek konos = cone and kephale = head; he refers to the conical heads of the female gametangia stands .
features
The thallus is medium to large in size, can be up to 2 inches wide and 15 inches long and is forked several times. It has clear fields on the upper side, each field with a breathing opening visible as a white point, which is raised cone-shaped above the thallus. Each breathing opening consists of 5 to 6 concentric rings with 6 to 8 narrow cells each.
The gender distribution is diocesan . The disc-shaped antheridia are somewhat recessed on the surface of the thallus. The archegonia are conical heads (name) that are raised with a long handle. Spore capsules are on the underside of these heads. Spores are multicellular and 70 to 100 micrometers in size.
species
The 3 species known worldwide are distributed exclusively in the northern hemisphere, especially in temperate climates:
- Conocephalum conicum , Echtes Kegelkopfmoos, Shiny Kegelkopfmoos
- Conocephalum japonicum , only found in East Asia
- Conocephalum salebrosum , Mattes Cone Head Moss
In Europe the two species C. conicum and C. salebrosum occur.
