Conrad Bareiß

Conrad Bareiß , also Conrad Bareiss , (born April 7, 1880 as Conrad Christoph (e) in Chicago , Illinois ; † May 21, 1958 in Zurich ) was a German entrepreneur and art collector. He was the owner of a worsted spinning mill. In 1927 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Salach .

Life

He was the son of Henrietta "Hattie" Christoph (e) nee Seipp from a wealthy family in Chicago. His mother got to know the factory owner Otto Bareiß from Salach and when both married in 1888, he adopted their son Conrad, who then took his father's name. Otto Bareiß promoted the local industry in Salach, so that he was made an honorary citizen there in 1923.

After attending the humanistic grammar school, Conrad Bareiß spent a year studying in England, after which he studied at the technical universities in Berlin and Zurich. He then went on extensive educational trips through England, France and the USA. After his father's death, he became the owner of Schachenmayr, Mann & Co., worsted spinning mill in Salach near Göppingen . As such he became a member and board member of numerous other companies, for example he was chairman of the supervisory board of the worsted yarn spinning mill in Bietigheim . He was also a member of the Rotary Club Stuttgart and was known as an art collector.

Today's Catholic Kindergarten Hattie Bareiss in Salach was founded by him and his wife in 1927 and today bears their name.

family

Conrad Bareiß was married to Charlotte Freiin von Rassler vom Gammerschwang (1889–1965). Their two children together include Walter Bareiss (* May 24, 1919), who was born in Chicago and lived in the USA.

Honors

  • On October 1, 1927, he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Salach.
  • Appointment as honorary senator of the Technical University of Stuttgart
  • The Philadelphia Symphony , which premiered in Vienna in 1961 , was dedicated to him.
