Life

The exact dates of birth and death of Konrad von Hirsau are not known. Some representations refer to a period from 1070 to 1150, other dates derive from Konrad's “Altercatio Pauli et Gamalielis”, which was written towards the end of the 12th century, a date of death around this time. In the 12th century he worked as a monk and teacher in Hirsau Monastery. Information about his life comes from a later time and is therefore also not very certain. The initial K (C in Latin) is an abbreviation of his name.

His work consists entirely of textbooks and belongs to monastic theology with adoptions from early scholasticism , which can also be found in other important clergy of this time. Konrad von Hirsau oriented himself on the school of the Canons of St-Victor , in particular on the writings of Hugo von St. Viktor . His “Dialogus super auctores”, created in the first half of the 12th century, remained unfinished and was not widely used. The "Dialogus" introduced the reading of ancient and Christian authors and justified the study of the artes liberales as interpreted as Christian ethics. The “Dialogus de mundi contemptu vel amore” shows how a priest can be converted to monastic life. In the text “Altercatio Pauli et Gamalielis”, which was written at the end of the 12th century, a dispute about law and grace turns to a presentation of the main doctrines of the Christian faith with the help of typological and moral interpretation of an outline of the historical books of the Old Testament and to become of the Gospels.

Most of the works are drafts or unfinished. Many refer to other works and show mutual borrowings, and the chronology of their creation is unclear. The attribution of the “ Speculum virginum ”, which originated in the first half of the 12th century, the dialogue between the priest Peregrinus and the nun Theodora, in which questions about monastic life and following Christ are discussed, is uncertain .
