The Conringsche Haus in the East Frisian district town of Aurich ( Aurich district , Lower Saxony ) is a listed building from the 19th century. It has the address Burgstrasse 43 and is the only privately used residential building in the Aurich pedestrian zone.

Building description

The Conringsche Haus is a stately classical palace , which is connected to the gate on the right. The broad brick building has two floors. The portal is located in the center of the long facade wall with flat central projections. Of the seven slightly protruding axes , the three middle ones are combined with the portal to form a slightly protruding risalit. They are " emphasized by a flat triangular gable above the cornice ". In the tympanum there is a transversely oval window surrounded by a garland . Under the gable triangle there is a frieze , which is divided by triglyphs ( ancient Greek τρίγλυφος to German "three grooves / notches"), between which there are rosettes .

history

The Aurich architect Conrad Bernhard Meyer built the palace in 1804 for his friend, the bailiff Justus from the Conring family of lawyers , after whom the building is named and who still live in it today. Conring wanted “a representative house in the style of modern classicism”. Meyer had the front building of a Conring house on Burgstrasse torn down, except for the utility rooms, and then added a new front building to it. The house is still owned by the Conring family and can therefore only be viewed from the outside.

Ensemble protection

The painting of a neighboring residential and commercial building in the style of a graffito in 2017 attracted media attention. The neighboring facade depicted an East Frisian landscape with a cow, grass and flowers over a large area and in strong colors. Since, in the opinion of the city of Aurich, the painting violated the ensemble protection anchored in the Lower Saxony Monument Protection Act because of the listed Conringschen Haus , it ordered overpainting. The owner then turned to the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation . After an on-site meeting in 2018, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, the highest monument protection authority, spoke out in favor of removing the paintwork. In 2018 it was announced that the house would be painted brown as it would impair the view of the listed building next door.
