The Uruguayan National Council ( Spanish “Consejo Nacional de Gobierno” ) was the governing national council of Uruguay from 1952 to 1967/68.

history

By a constitutional law of October 26, 1951 and by an election of the people of Uruguay held on December 16, 1951, the existing constitution of the Republic of Uruguay from 1934, as amended on November 29, 1942, was replaced by a new one Constitution consisting of 332 articles replaced. The election took place according to the political system of the country , through the proportional system in the democratic presidential republic of Uruguay .

Politically determined by this, in 1952 the government national council of the Republic of Uruguay, consisting of nine members, took over the executive power and thus took over the duties of the President of Uruguay. The National Council was made up of nine members from the two strongest parties in the country that emerged from the election. The party with the best election result put six and the party with the second best election result three party members in the National Council.

The main reason for the establishment of the National Council can be seen in the political achievements and prestige of the country during the 20th century under José Batlle y Ordóñez . In addition, there is a population that perceives and perceives its system of government to be predominantly democratic . The memory of Uruguay's location under a caudillo like Gabriel Terra should not be underestimated either.

First Chairman of the Board of the Consejo Nacional de Gobierno was Andrés Martínez Trueba . On November 27, 1966, around 59% of the eligible population of Uruguay voted for another constitutional amendment to the country. With the new state constitution from 1967, the political activities of the government national council ended and there were again sought-after free and fair elections in 1968, which were won by the liberal Partido Colorado , of which José Batlle y Ordóñez was a member.
