In the spring of 2005, the award-winning dancer and choreographer Javier Báez was appointed headmaster and managing director of the CDSH, while Carlos Jaramillo switched to the position of artistic director. Javier Báez completed his ballet and modern training in Mexico City , including with the Ballet Independiente, and has worked as a teacher and choreographer at the CDSH since 2002.

In 2008, Raul Valdez replaced Carlos Jaramillo as artistic director. Valdez received his classical and contemporary dance training in New York ( Dance Theater Harlem ) and was awarded the "Prix Dom Perignon" choreography prize from the Hamburg Ballet by John Neumeier in 1999. Tanja Báez has been part of the management team since 2008. She has been teaching at the CDSH since 2004 and received her dance and pedagogical classical ballet training in Zurich and Monte Carlo .

education

The three-year training at the CDSH is aimed at young adults who have a good basic knowledge of contemporary dance and ballet. A jury of experts decides on admission in a selection process. The training is divided into three phases: In the 1st and 2nd semester, the fundamentals of dance technique are developed. Core subjects are Graham Technique, Cunningham Technique, other contemporary dance styles, ballet and contact improvisation. The core subjects are supplemented by the minor subjects modern jazz, drama, singing, Pilates, anatomy and dance history.

In phase 2 (3rd and 4th semester) the basic techniques are deepened and developed and the creative ideas implemented in improvisation. In the 4th semester, the focus is on creating your own solo in the subject “Choreography and Composition” and presenting it in theater performances.

In phase 3 (5th and 6th semesters) the focus is on preparing for the final dance exam. In the sixth and last semester, the trainees train and rehearse under the conditions of a dance company in order to get an insight into the working life of a stage dancer within the framework of the school. During the final year, renowned guest choreographers accompany the students in designing their final project. They include Teresa Ranieri , Antje Pfundtner, Massimo Gerrardi, Fernando Dominguez and Angela Guerreiro.

Guest lecturers expand the content spectrum during the entire training. Including renowned artists such as Idan Sharabi and Shumpei Nemoto (member of the ensemble of the world-famous Cullberg Ballet ). The CDSH has positioned itself more internationally over the years. Students from all over the world are now coming to the Hanseatic city: Students from the following nations are currently in training or are graduates: Angola, Australia, Bolivia, China, Denmark, Germany, France, Greenland, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan , Colombia, Croatia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Ukraine, USA, Venezuela.

Even if the formal confirmation from the authorities is still pending, in practice it has been found that the CDSH degree has been recognized as a Bachelor by a number of universities: Some CDSH graduates have been accepted into various Master’s courses, for example in Berlin from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts. Among the graduates of the CDSH is the dancer and choreographer Louise Wagner , daughter of Richard Wagner's great-granddaughter Nike Wagner .

The Contemporary Dance School Hamburg has been a member of the State Association of Private Creative Schools (LPKH) since 2016. The association bundles the interests of more than a dozen training centers in the fields of image and sound, design, drama and stage, text and music.

The CDSH in Hamburg is currently spread across several locations. The so-called "Wiese Project" is intended to bring the locations together under one roof in the coming years. The "Wiese" is a former factory on Wiesendamm in the Barmbek district , which will be converted into an art and cultural center for performing artists from the fields of theater, dance, music and education in the coming years.
