Forum for Peace Psychology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Forum Friedenspsychologie e. V. (FFP), formerly Peace Initiative Psychology - Psychosocial Professions , was founded in 1982 in connection with the discussion about arming NATO with Pershing 2 and cruise missiles ; since December 1986 it has been a registered association, which is now recognized as a non-profit organization.

The purpose of the association is to investigate the psychosocial aspects of peacekeeping, international understanding and disarmament and to disseminate knowledge in these areas. However, since the end of the Cold War, the association's focus has expanded to include additional topics in peace psychology (e.g. right-wing extremism , anti-Semitism , human rights , peace journalism and peace policy engagement). The association pursues its goals primarily through research, the publication of books and scientific articles, annual specialist conferences, information through public lectures and statements on peace policy issues.

The most important book that has emerged from the activities of the FFP is War and Peace: Handbook of Conflict and Peace Psychology. The FFP is also represented on the editorial board of the peace science journal Science and Peace .

The FFP is a (founding) member of the International Network of Psychologists for Social Responsibility.

Since 2007 the FFP has been awarding the Gert Sommer Prize for Peace Psychology, endowed with 500 euros, which honors academic theses in peace psychology. The award is named after the founding member, long-time chairman and now honorary chairman of the FFP, Gert Sommer (Marburg).
