Content Protection and Copy Management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Content Protection and Copy Management (abbreviated, DVB-CPCM or CPCM ) is a digital rights management standard developed by the DVB Group. The main application is the interoperative rights management for the European digital television , but also for other countries with the use of DVB as television transmission standard.

function

CPCM prescribes how information on the right of use is added to digital content, which then defines the use within CPCM-enabled devices and how this can and may be used.

Content providers can have a number of flags that are stored within the content and provide information about the usage rights. These flags can determine sending or copying to and between other CPCM devices and allow or deny this. Content can also be offered for a certain period of time and blocked beyond this period, or the simultaneous playback on two separate devices can be prohibited.

Domains

CPCM can differentiate between devices inside and outside a specified “Authorized Domain”. The Authorized Domain can include devices both inside the house and in other locations, such as cars and vacation homes. It also specifies whether the content should remain within the house (the "Local Environment") or within a physical region, such as a country (the "Geographic Area").

Broadcast flag

CPCM is sometimes mistakenly confused with the failed US broadcast flag . CPCM is only applied inside the home after the broadcast has been received. However, the flags that have been sent can be used to activate and control the access restriction.
