The Continental Bulldog is a dog breed from Switzerland that is not recognized by the FCI and is recognized by the SKG at national level. On July 8, 2014, the board of directors of the SCC decided that Continental Bulldogs can be included in the French studbook and national pedigrees can be issued. Since January 1, 2015, the breed has also been recognized by the VDH in Germany at national level.

Origin and history

At the beginning of the 21st century in Switzerland the discussions about stricter animal laws and breeding regulations, which should forbid “the creation and keeping of animals with certain characteristics, especially abnormalities in physique and behavior ...” began, Imelda Angehrn decided in spring 2001 to do one To undertake a breeding attempt to produce a medium-sized Bulldog, which should meet all the animal welfare requirements for a healthy dog. In summer 2001, with the approval of the Swiss Cynological Society (SKG), the first crossing s litter English Bulldog × Olde English Bulldogge fell . These dogs were subsequently called Pickwick Bulldogs Old Type (PBOT).

It quickly became apparent that backcrossing into the English Bulldog was not possible because of the rejection by the standard breeding association in England. However, the breeding program in itself was a success: the crossbreeding showed that the attempt to improve the health of the English Bulldog resulted in the creation of a new breed very close to the original Bulldog type. A project group was formed from representatives of the Working Committee for Breeding Development and Breeding Promotion of the SKG, which worked towards the recognition of a new Bulldog breed. Over 70 dogs were assessed by a veterinarian and judge and an application was made for their entry in the appendix register of the Swiss Dog Studbook (SHSB).

After that, the central board of the SKG had to deal with this project. On September 15, 2004, the application for recognition of the new breed, in order to differentiate it from the English Bulldog under the name Continental Bulldog , was granted. The decisions and measures for the formation of the new breed were made in consultation with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The Continental Bulldog will become a Swiss breed if it fulfills the conditions required by the FCI and is recognized as a new breed. The Continental Bulldog Club Switzerland (CBCS) was founded on December 5, 2004. On January 24th, 2011 the application for recognition of the breed was submitted to the FCI. In a letter from the SKG dated February 27, 2014 to the FCI board, it was stated about the application: “It was with great disappointment that we received the decision (sent by email on November 20, 2013) by the FCI board regarding the non-recognition of Continental Bulldog noted as a new breed. […] Absolutely incomprehensible […] are […] the recommendations and arguments of the two preliminary advisory FCI commissions [ Standard Commission and Scientific Commission - d. A. ], which the FCI board finally followed and which led to this negative decision. The Continental Bulldog differs significantly from the English Bulldog in all decisive criteria. "
