In addition to the Convent and Academy of the Visitation , the Convent of Mercy is one of the two surviving historical monastery complexes in Mobile.

history

The Sisters of Mercy came to Mobile in 1884 with the new Bishop Dominic Manucy to serve the parish of St. Joseph. As part of their social action, they visited the sick in their homes, the disadvantaged in the poor house and the prisoners in the prisons. To this end, they taught in schools and prepared the administration of the sacraments . In 1895 they founded St. Joseph's School in the parish of St. Joseph, which was later renamed the Convent of Mercy Academy. Originally five buildings were dedicated to the school, including one as the home of the Sisters.

The foundation stone of the neo-baroque building with three and a half floors was laid on September 8, 1908. The building was designed by architect AH Downey as a common building for the monastery and school to replace the old frame structures. The number of students increased over the next two decades, so a new three-story building was built behind the existing building in 1928. The new building served as a school, while the 1908 building was used as a monastery. The school closed in 1968 and the Sisters moved elsewhere in Mobile in 1969. The former school building was then used by the Empress Chandelier Company. In 2002 the complex was expanded and renovated and became the St. Francis Place Condominiums.
