The Cook Mountains are a group of mountain peaks in the Ross Dependency of Antarctica . They loom between the Mulock and Darwin glaciers .
They were first sighted by participants in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) from the Ross Ice Shelf . However, the Cook Mountains were first mapped by the New Zealand team of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) and finally by the United States Geological Survey using aerial photographs between 1959 and 1963. They were named by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the navigator and explorer James Cook (1728–1779).
