Cook da Books were a British pop band active in the 1980s . The band name refers to the English idiom to cook the books " to fry the balance sheet".

history

Cook da Books was founded in Fazakerley , Liverpool , in 1980 and originally started out as a reggae quartet. Shortly afterwards, when the film composer Vladimir Cosma was looking for an interpreter for the song Your Eyes for the film La Boum 2 - Die Fete geht weiter , the band won the bid and was allowed to present the song during an appearance in the film. The film is a teenage romance and the song is an emotional pop ballad, composed by Cosma and lyrics by Jeff Jordan. It became a hit in France, the film's country of origin, and a few other countries, but not in their homeland, Britain.

As a result, the four Englishmen tried to build a career with their own independent label and toured the USA as the opening act for Men at Work and Joan Armatrading, among others . But despite a number of single releases, they could not land any further success. In 1985 and 1986 she brought Cosma back to France, where she performed the title song Spartakus for the TV series Les mondes engloutis (English title Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea ) and the title song The Look Out Is for the British for the cartoon Asterix Record out .

But the band was already in the process of dissolution and after the departure of keyboardist Tony Prescott, who founded his own band The Prescotts , the three remaining musicians continued as Da Books .

The band experienced a brief comeback when the two La Boum films were shown for the first time on German-speaking television in 1987 and were once again very successful. As a result, the title song of Part 1, Reality by Richard Sanderson , and Cook da Books Your Eyes was initially re-released in Germany together on a single that reached number 1 in the charts. Although most of the success came from Sanderson, the Cook da Books song was also frequently played on the radio. When the great success became apparent, the B-side of Reality was pressed with another title from La Boum (I) and Your Eyes was published as a separate Singe / Maxi. In Austria, on the other hand, Your Eyes was on a single together with another track from the La Boum 2 soundtrack both in 1983 and 1987 and got its own ranking there (10th place or 14th place if it was re-released).

In 1989 singer Peter Deary also left the band. Owen Moran and John Legget continued to perform with new musicians under the band name until well into the 90s, before the band finally split up. Some of the former members continued to play in other bands after they left.
