Cophixalus ateles is an amphibian of the family -mouthed (Microhylidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 15 millimeters. The top of the body is brown or gray. The front of the head is usually yellowish on top and on the sides. Sometimes there is a curved, blackish dorsolateral stripe, sometimes a light longitudinal line or a broad light stripe in the middle of the back. The underside is brown or blackish. The head is wider than it is long. The forehead is rounded, slightly protruding and slightly shorter than the diameter of the eye. The canthus rostralis is strong. The rein region is a bit crooked and deepened. The interorbital space is slightly wider than an upper eyelid. The eardrum is clearly visible and half as wide as the diameter of the eye. The first finger is very short but not half as long as the second and not widened at the tip. The adhesive discs of the remaining fingers are very large, wider than they are long, twice as wide as the fingers, half as wide as the eye and larger than the adhesive discs on the toes that are not webbed. The subarticular cusps are flat and indistinct. With the hind leg placed forward against the body, the tibiotarsal joint extends to the eye. There are small warts and longitudinal folds on the top of the body. The underside is smooth.

Occurrence

Cophixalus ateles is only known from the west side of Mount Obree in the Central Province in Papua New Guinea at altitudes of 600 to 1800 meters.

Systematics

Cophixalus ateles was first described in 1898 by George Albert Boulenger as Sphenophryne ateles . Parker placed the species in the genus Cophixalus in 1934 .

Cophixalus ateles is classified by the IUCN as "Data Deficient" (insufficient data basis).
