Copiapoa calderana is a species of the Copiapoa genusin the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet calderana comes from Latin and means 'from the location on the coastal zone north of the caldera in Chile'.

description

Copiapoa calderana grows individually or in loose groups with spherical to cylindrical shoots with a bright gray-green color. They measure 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter and have a gray crown area. The 10 to 17  ribs are wide and blunt, but not notched and up to an inch high. The circular areoles are gray. They turn black with age. They are up to seven millimeters apart. The thorns are sub-like to needle-like, straight and black or brown. They often turn gray with age. There are one to two central spines 1.5 to 3 centimeters long and four to seven radial spines up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are yellow. They smell and are 2.5 to 3.5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa calderana is widespread in Chile in the Región de Atacama north of Chaldera near the coast.

It was first described in 1959 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Copiapoa atacamensis var. Calderana (F.Ritter) AEHoffm. (1989).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
