Copiapoa esmeraldana is a species of plant in the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species goes back to the place where the plant was found, the Chilean town of Esmeralda.
description
Copiapoa esmeraldana grows individually or in groups with large tuberous roots. The spherical shoots are green to brownish in color. They grow to be 3.5 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The 13 to 16 ribs are partially humped but deeply notched and up to an inch high. The whitish areoles sit on the humps at a distance of 8 to 15 millimeters. The thorns are straight and brown. There are six to eight needle radial spines with a length of 0.5 to 1 centimeter and three to four awl central spines with a length of one to two centimeters.
The fragrant yellow flowers are up to 3.5 inches long. The spherical fruits are cloudy green.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Copiapoa esmeraldana is common in Chile in the Antofagasta region near Esmeralda .
It was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Copiapoa humilis var. Esmeraldana (F.Ritter) AEHoffm. (1989).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
