Copiapoa grandiflora is a species of plant in the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet grandiflora comes from Latin and means 'large-flowered'.
description
Copiapoa grandiflora grows rapidly forming cushions with groups up to 50 centimeters in diameter. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are gray-green and measure 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The 12 to 19 ribs are more or less humped. They are 1 to 1.2 inches high and wide and notched. The areoles are whitish. The straight thorns are black to brown in color. There are two to four thick central spines and seven to ten needle-like radial spines with a length of one to three centimeters.
The yellow flowers are 3 to 5.5 inches long. The spherical fruits are reddish or brownish and up to 1.5 centimeters long and large in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Copiapoa grandiflora is common in Chile in the Antofagasta region in the Esmeralda area .
It was first described in 1963 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Copiapoa cinerascens var. Grandiflora (F.Ritter) AEHoffm. (1989) and Copiapoa cinerascens supsp. grandiflora (F.Ritter) NPTaylor (1997).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
