Copiapoa hypogaea is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hypogaea means' (Greek under; earth), under the earth; underground'.

description

Copiapoa hypogaea usually grows individually, occasionally in small groups, seldom protruding above the ground surface, sometimes even completely sunken, with bulbous roots. The individual shoots are depressed spherical. They are gray-brown to greenish in color and 3 to 6.5 centimeters in diameter. The epidermis is noticeably wrinkled. The 10 to 14  ribs are slightly twisted, broadly notched with chin-like projections. The areoles are sunk and covered with white wool. Thorns are mostly absent; at times there are 1 to 6 tiny ones, blackish in color.

The yellow flowers appear at the tip of the shoot and are wide open.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa hypogaea is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta in the area around Chañaral on hills near the coast.

It was first described in 1960 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is the variety Copiapoa hypogaea var. Barquitensis F.Ritter (1980).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
