Coptodon kottae ( Syn .: Tilapia kottae ) is a species of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae) that is endemic to the Cameroonian crater lakes Barombi Koto and Mboandong .

features

Coptodon kottae can reach a length of 15 cm, the head occupies 33.7 to 37% of the standard length . The body is oval, the eyes are relatively large. The front profile is straight to slightly rounded. The jaws are covered with three to four rows of teeth. The teeth of the outer row are two-pointed. On the lower branch of the first gill arch there are 8 to 10 gill rakes . The lower pharyngealia has curved teeth at the front and three-pointed teeth at the back. Your ventral keel is shorter than the dentate area.

The fish are brown to copper in color. Depending on the mood, they show four to eight vertical stripes on the sides of the body. The pectoral fins are transparent, the pelvic fins are black, the anal fin dark brown or black. In the soft-rayed part of the brownish dorsal fin there is a tilapia spot , sometimes also a few light, round spots. The latter are also often seen in the upper section of the caudal fin. This is also brown and has a straight rear edge. During reproduction, the lower jaw, chest and abdomen of the males, and sometimes the lower part of the caudal peduncle, are dark brown to blackish. The upper half of the body is then light copper-colored to yellowish. In females, the lower jaw, chest and abdomen are whitish.

Way of life

Coptodon kottae feeds mainly on plants, growth and detritus . Like all Coptodon species, Coptodon kottae is a substrate breeder . Spawning is hidden, e.g. B. between sunken driftwood. The fish practice very intensive brood care.
