Cornel Țăranu
Cornel Țăranu (born June 20, 1934 in Cluj ) is a Romanian composer and conductor.
Țăranu studied composition with Sigismund Toduță at the Cluj Music Academy from 1951 to 1957 . He then taught here, from 1970 to 1990 as an assistant, then as a professor of composition. 1966–67 he studied music theory at the Conservatoire de Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen , 1968–69 at the Darmstadt Summer Courses, analysis with György Ligeti , conducting with Bruno Maderna and drums with Christoph Caskel .
Since 1957 he has taught at the Cluj Music Academy, since 1990 as a professor. In 1968 he founded the Ars Nova orchestra there , with which he has worked as musical director and conductor ever since. Since 1990 he has been Vice-President of the Romanian Composers Union and since 1995 Director of the Modern Music Festival in Cluj-Napoca.
For his compositions he received a. a. several times the Prize of the Romanian Composers Union (1972, 1978, 1981, 1982 and 2001) and the Koussevitzky Prize . In 1993 he became an associate member of the Romanian Academy , in 2002 Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . In addition to symphonic and other orchestral works, he composed two operas, chamber music, vocal works for choir and songs as well as several film scores.
