Cornelie Benndorf-Much

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cornelia Benndorf-Much (* 1880 ; † 1962 in Vienna ) was an Austrian English student, gymnastics teacher and high school director. She was the third wife of the old Germanist Rudolf Much .

Live and act

In 1907 Benndorf passed the examination for gym teachers and headed the "Section for Physical Education of Young Women in Middle Schools" in the Vienna Lyceum Association. In the school year 1915/16 she was the first female middle school inspector to be entrusted with the technical inspection of physical education at girls' middle schools and in 1919 with the organization of advanced training courses for physical education teachers at the University of Vienna . On the recommendation of Elise Richter , the now married Benndorf-Much became the first woman to take over as director of the Döblinger Girls' Middle School, now Billrothgymnasium . Benndorf-Much's strong German national sentiment was known to Richter, but he found them "capable". According to Richter in her autobiography, the school had a different reputation after a short time, as in the first few weeks Benndorf-Much waited early in the morning at the entrance for the late students and teachers who were disciplined to punctuality in a short time.

During the time of National Socialism , the girls' school was nationalized by the regime. For teachers, and for students with a Jewish background had the "annexation" of Austria to the German Reich fatal consequences: they all had to leave school and some fell in the concentration camps Theresienstadt , Opole, Riga and Auschwitz the Holocaust victim . After the liberation from National Socialism, Benndorf-Much was deposed and the school was provisionally managed by Ella Spannagl. In the grave of her husband Rudolf Much she was buried in an honorary grave in the Baumgartner Friedhof (group E, number 331) in Vienna.
