Cornelis Valckenier

Cornelis Valckenier (born March 19, 1640 in Amsterdam , † March 18, 1700 ibid) was an Amsterdam regent and one of the first directors of the Suriname Society .

Cornelis Valckenier was born as the son of Jacob Valckenier (1602–1673) and Hillegonde Hasselaer . The family of the Valckenier belonged to the leading regent patriciate of Amsterdam. His career led him as a merchant in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). From 1667 to 1672 he was governor (Dutch: opperhoofd , title at the VOC) of the Tonkin colony in Vietnam . In the East Indies he married Catharina van Heijningen in 1669; In 1673 their son Jacob Valckenier was born. Valckenier was appointed admiral of the return fleet in 1675 .

In 1676 he became captain of the Amsterdam Civil Guard . Two years later, Valckenier was accepted into the magistrate (Dutch: vroedschap ).

Cornelis Valckenier and his wife bought the Valk en Heining estate in Baambrugge in 1677 .

In 1680 he became a lay judge (Dutch: schepen ) of Amsterdam and in 1696 and 1699 Valckenier was elected mayor.

Valckenier was also one of the first directors of the Suriname Society from 1683 to 1700. Here he played an important role together with Jacob Boreel .
