Cornelius van Wyk
Cornelius van Wyk († April 25, 1924 in Rehoboth , South West Africa ) was the second captain of the Rehoboth Baster from 1905 and 1914 to 1924 .
Cornelius van Wyk succeeded his father Hermanus van Wyk in the office of captain . After the death of Hermanus in 1905, the German colonial power refused to recognize a successor. Instead, she installed the Basterrat . Cornelius indirectly took over the office of captain in 1905, but officially only in 1914.
In 1915 the Basters, who had signed a protection treaty with the German Reich almost 30 years earlier , rebelled against the protection force for German South West Africa . Van Wyk had previously met with the Prime Minister of the South African Union, Louis Botha . The riot finally ended after the wife and children of Cornelius were killed, among others, in a battle at Sam Khubis . This place is in the recognition (as of 2013) as a national monument of Namibia .
Under Cornelius van Wyk on July 9, 1915 the de facto independence of the Rehoboth area as " Homeland " was approved by the South African Union.
His successor as captain was Albert Mouton in 1924 .
