Hermanus van Wyk (* 1835 in the vicinity of Fraserburg , Cape Colony ; † 1905 in Rehoboth , German South West Africa ) was the first captain of the Rehoboth Baster from 1868 .

Under his leadership, the mixed race migrated from the North Cape in the Cape Colony (today South Africa ) north to about 90 kilometers south of Windhoek , the capital of today's Namibia . They wanted to escape racism in their original homeland. By 1870 the first 30 families had moved to land around what is now Rehoboth , which Kaptein van Wyk had acquired from local traditional guides .

As early as 1872 this expressed the independence of the Rehoboth area . Van Wyk negotiated a protection treaty with the German colonial rulers early on . In connection with this, Baster fought alongside the protection force for German South West Africa against the Nama and Herero .

His successor as captain was his son Cornelius van Wyk .
