The Rehoboth area , since 1976 only Rehoboth , is a not generally recognized state in the center of Namibia . The representatives of the Rehoboth Baster , the Basterrat (parliament), led by the Kaptein , declared independence from South West Africa on March 20, 1990 . Namibia became independent a day later. The state independence itself is not consistently implemented by the Rehoboth Baster. In an official declaration in 1992, they described themselves as traditional people in the Republic of Namibia .
The area includes the Homeland Rehoboth , which existed until 1990 . It is 14,216 square kilometers and has about 35,000 inhabitants. The official languages are Afrikaans and English . The capital is Rehoboth . Head of state is Kaptein Martin Dentlinger , who was appointed on an interim basis in 2018. The government forms the Captains Council .
The establishment of the state of the Rehoboth area is based on the constitution of January 31, 1872, which was amended on January 1, 1874. It is known as the Vaderlike Bet (in German about paternal law ). The independence of Rehoboth Baster was first recognized by a protection agreement with the protection force for German South West Africa on September 15, 1885. In addition, the transfer of the area to other states or powers was prohibited. In 1976 the right to self-determination was reaffirmed.
Unlike other ethnic groups in Namibia, the Rehoboth Baster are not recognized as a traditional community . The Rehoboth Baster was a member of the organization of unrepresented nations and peoples from February 2, 2007 to December 2019 . Politically, the Rehoboth Baster in Namibia are the since 2014 with a parliamentary seat represented United People's Movement represents.
