Fraserburg is a place in the South African province of Northern Cape . It is located in the municipality of Karoo Hoogland in the district of Namakwa .

geography

Fraserburg has 3029 inhabitants (as of 2011). Around 85 percent of the population counted themselves among the colored in 2011 . 96 percent said Afrikaans was the main language used. The climate is arid . The city is located on the Nuweveld Plateau north of the Nuweveld Mountains . The surrounding cities are around 100 or more kilometers away. There is often snowfall in winter.

history

San lived in the area who left rock paintings . In 1759 Treckburen established the area for the first time . Willem Steenkamp was the first known white settler. The nearby Steemkampsberg was named after him. In 1851 the place was founded on the area of ​​the Rietfontein farm and named after the Scottish immigrant Colin Fraser. From 1861 to 1967 there was a prison on site; In 1862 the place received the municipal status. In 1870 the British set up a powder store against the Griqua , which was also used in the Second Boer War .

The place is considered to be the origin of the Basters , who moved northwards under Hermanus van Wyk from 1868 to what is now Rehoboth .

Fraserburg is on the R353, which runs from Williston in the northwest to Leeu Gamka in the south, and the R356, which connects Sutherland in the west-southwest with Loxton and via the R308 with Carnarvon in the northeast. Fraserburg Airport ( ICAO code FAFR) is located in the south of the city .

  • There are numerous houses from the Victorian and Edwardian ages in the city .
