Williston (originally Amandelboom ) is a town in the North Cape Province of South Africa . It is the administrative center of the municipality Karoo Hoogland in the district of Namakwa .

geography

Williston has 3368 inhabitants (as of 2011). Around 84 percent of the population counted themselves among the Coloreds (actually Nama ) in 2011, 96 percent stated Afrikaans as the main language used. The place is near the Sak River in a relatively flat area with a few hills, including the Singing Hills , which are occasionally used for singing. The climate is arid .

history

In 1768 Johan Abraham Nel planted an almond tree . There, founded Rhenish Missionary Society under Johann Heinrich Lutz a mission , formed around which called 1845 the Amandelboom place. In 1881 the place received municipal status, in 1919 it was named after Colonel Hampden Willis, a colonial official at the time. The lettering Amandelboom is in large letters on a hill in the east of the city.

Economy and Transport

Williston has the Williston Clinic Health Center .

Williston is on the R63 , which runs from Calvinia in the west to Carnarvon in the east, and the R353, which connects Brandvlei in the north-northwest with Fraserburg in the southeast. The city is also on the railway line from Hutchinson (near Victoria West ) to Calvinia, which is served by freight.

Williston Airport ( ICAO code FAWL) is located in the southeast of the city .

Attractions

A museum shows exhibits from the place and the surrounding area. In the center is a church building of the Dutch Reformed Church . The mission station church has been preserved.
