Corpus Nummorum Online

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Corpus Nummorum Online , initially Corpus Nummorum Thracorum and The Ancient Coins of Thrace - the numismatic themed portal , is a web portal in which the ancient coins of four historical landscapes - Moesia inferior , Mysia , Thrace and the Troas - are recorded. The Corpus has been collecting and publishing the coins of ancient Thrace since 2012 and of the other regions since 2018. The aim of the project is the creation of a typology and its numismatic interpretation. The leading organizations are the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) and the Münzkabinett Berlin . The Big Data Lab of the University of Frankfurt am Main was able to be won as a further project partner for the corresponding integration and development of computer-aided methods .

Examined region

The portal has been available in German and English since the beginning of 2020.

The basis for the portal are the coins from the Berlin Münzkabinett and the plaster casts of coins in the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, which are continuously supplemented by coins from other collections. So far, coins from more than 100 collections from 24 countries have been recorded in this way. There are also coins from private collections and auction catalogs.

As part of the project, a comprehensive catalog of the coins and types of the four ancient regions is being created on the Internet. The coins and types are shown with a picture if possible and are given a unique identification number. The use of authority data enables international exchange with other cross-collection numismatic portals such as nomisma, Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards Online and Roman Provincial Coinage . The project is led by Ulrike Peter , Karsten Tolle and Bernhard Weisser , many people are responsible for the entries and are supported by other external partners in the interests of Citizen Science . In addition to the coin and type catalog, the website also offers an interactive map and a comprehensive list of literature. Every month a coin is presented as Coin of the Month . The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

In April 2015 the meeting was Thrace. Local Coinage and Regional Identity. Organized Numismatic Research in the Digital Age . In June 2016 the project was awarded the second prize of the Berlin Digital Humanities Prize .
