Bernhard Weisser (* 1964 in Göttingen ) is a German numismatist .

Bernhard Weisser passed his Abitur in 1984 at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium Göttingen . He studied classical archeology, ancient history and prehistory and early history at the University of Göttingen and from 1987 at the University of Munich . A Meta-Ptichiako scholarship took him to the University of Athens in 1991 , and he took part in the graduate school Formation and Self-Presentation of Urban Elites in the Roman Empire for three years at the University of Cologne . In February 1996 he received his doctorate in Munich with his thesis Die Kaiserzeitliche Münzpräge von Pergamon . This was followed in 1996/97 by the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Since April 1996 he has been working for the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , initially as custodian , since the end of Bernd Kluge's tenure on September 30, 2014, as provisional head of the Münzkabinett and since June 1, 2015 as the new director. As the custodian of the ancient collection, Weisser is responsible for more than 150,000 coins from the beginning of coinage in the 7th century BC. Until the 3rd century AD.

After numerous teaching assignments since 1996, Weisser has been teaching as an honorary professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin since 2009 . Weisser is a specialist in ancient numismatics . Here he researches in particular the coinage of the Roman provinces and the Parthians as well as the coins found in Priene and Miletus . Since 2005 he has been managing the web publication of the Münzkabinett's holdings in an interactive catalog together with Bernd Kluge .
