Coryphantha calipensis is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet calipensis refers to the occurrence of the species near Calipan in the Mexican state of Puebla .

description

Coryphantha calipensis usually forms dense clumps. The spherical to somewhat cylindrical, gray-green to olive-green shoots reach heights of up to 9 centimeters with diameters of 5 to 8 centimeters. The warts , up to 30 millimeters long and up to 30 millimeters wide at their base , are conical towards their tip and pyramidal at the base. The axillae are woolly. The mostly single brownish to blackish central spine - sometimes three to four are formed - is barely curved and up to 1.5 centimeters long. The ten to 16 whitish, 1 to 1.5 centimeters long radial spines are needle-like and straight.

The yellow flowers are 5 to 6 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The green fruits are elongated and have lengths of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Coryphantha calipensis is common on alluvial soil and limestone rubble in the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca .

The first description by Salvador Arias Montes was published in 1992. Reto F. Dicht and Adrian D. Lüthy treated Coryphantha calipensis in 2001 as a subspecies of Coryphantha pallida .

Nomenclatural synonyms are Coryphantha pycnacantha var. Calipensis U.Guzmán (1997, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Coryphantha pallida subsp. calipensis (Bravo ex S.Arias) Dicht & A.Lüthy (2000).
