Coryphantha elephantidens is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet elephantidens comes from Latin and means 'elephant tooth' and describes the wart shape of the species.

description

Coryphantha elephantidens grows individually or in large groups. The depressed spherical to cylindrical shoots are glossy dark green and reach heights of up to 14 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters. The very large, thick and massive warts are strong, somewhat rounded and deeply furrowed. The axillae are densely woolly. Central spines are absent. The 6 to 8 spread radial spines are strong, curved and subpulate. They are yellowish with a brown tip and are up to 2 inches long.

The flowers are deep purple-pink or white with a reddish throat and reddish central stripe. They have a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha elephantidens is widespread in Mexico .

The first description as Mammillaria elephantidens was published in 1838 by Charles Lemaire . In 1868 he placed them in the genus Coryphantha . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Coryphantha elephantidens subsp. elephantidens
  • Coryphantha elephantidens subsp. bumamma
  • Coryphantha elephantidens subsp. greenwoodii

Coryphantha elephantidens is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified. The subspecies Coryphantha elephantidens subsp. greenwoodii was named " Endangered (EN) " in 2002 . H. Endangered, classified but not reassessed when the species was reclassified in 2009.
