Coryphantha ramillosa is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ramillosa is derived from the diminutive of the Latin noun ramus for 'twig' and -osus for 'full' and refers to the similarity of the dense thorns with small bundles of twigs. English common names are "Big Bend Cory-Cactus" and "Bunched Cory-Cactus".

Coryphantha ramillosa usually grows individually, but sometimes branches out and then forms groups. The spherical to broadly obovate, dark gray-green to grass-green shoots reach heights of 6 to 9 centimeters with a diameter of 6 to 10 centimeters. The apex of the shoot is often depressed. The ascending conical warts are up to 20 millimeters long. Nectar glands are usually absent. The up to four whitish central spines are protruding or spread out, straight to slightly curved and occasionally scrubby or twisted. They are 1.7 to 4 inches long. The eleven to 20 whitish, 0.9 to 3.5 cm long radial spines are usually straight.

The light pink to deep pink purple or shiny yellow flowers reach lengths of 3.5 to 6.5 centimeters and diameters of 3 to 5 centimeters. The very fleshy dark green to light gray green fruits have lengths of up to 2.1 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha ramillosa is common in the United States in the southwest of the state of Texas and the Mexican states of Coahuila and Chihuahua .

The first description by Ladislaus Cutak was published in 1942. A nomenclature synonym is Mammillaria ramillosa (Cutak) D.Weniger (1970, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Coryphantha ramillosa subsp. ramillosa
  • Coryphantha ramillosa subsp. santarosa Dicht & A.Lüthy

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies was not recorded separately.
