Cosgaya is a northern Spanish village of about 50 inhabitants, administratively to the municipality ( municipio ) Camaleño in the Comarca of Liébana in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria belongs.

location

Cosgaya is located in the valley of the Río Deva at an altitude of about 680 meters above sea level. d. M. at the foot of the Picos de Europa , part of the Cantabrian Mountains . Camaleño, the main town in the municipality, is about seven kilometers north; the small town of Potes is about 14 kilometers (driving distance) to the northeast.

Population development

At the beginning of the 20th century, the village , consisting of three hamlets ( Areños , Cosgaya and Treviño ), had well over 200 inhabitants. As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , many jobs have been lost, causing rural exodus.

economy

Agriculture, especially cattle breeding, traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small mountain community, whose inhabitants lived largely on a self-sufficient basis until the middle of the 20th century . Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has been added since the 1960s.

history

Finds show that Stone Age hunters and gatherers roamed the valley of the Río Deva . Cosgaya is first mentioned in the 10th century in the Crónica Albeldense in connection with another defeat of the Moors at Monte Subiedes after the Battle of Covadonga , which was already costly for them .

Attractions

Granary (
hórreo )
  • Apart from the scenic charms of the surrounding area, which invite you to go hiking, the village itself offers hardly any sights other than a granary ( hórreo ).
  • The stone- built church dates from the late 18th century and was a gift from Count Servando Gómez de la Cortina, who lived in Mexico, to his homeland. A coat of arms is emblazoned above the Renaissance- style portal on the south side ; the unadorned west facade is elevated by a bell gable ( espadaña ). A chapel on the left side of the church was to be reserved forever for his brother's family, who directed its construction.
