The County Ground or Essex Cricket Ground is a cricket - Stadium in the English town of Chelmsford . The stadium serves as the home of the Essex County Cricket Club .
history
Games have been played on this field since at least 1860. Essex has been using the stadium as its home stadium since 1967. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1982. In 2013 there were plans to extensively develop the stadium further, including a new pavilion and apartment buildings in the current parking lots. Current plans envisage that construction will start in autumn 2016.
Capacity and infrastructure
The stadium currently has a capacity of 6,500 seats. It has had floodlight masts since 2002. The two ends are called the River End and Hayes Close End .

In addition to being used in county cricket, international matches have been played here three times. One game was played here at the 1983 Cricket World Cup and two games at the 1999 Cricket World Cup .
